Way to lessen emotional distress in children during crisis/emergencies...

  • Consider limiting the amount of media exposure

  • Encourage children to ask questions and use age appropriate explanations

  • Review safety procedures and preventative measures

  • Make and keep a schedule while at home and away from regular activities.  Keep meals, bedtime and other routines as close to typical as possible

  • Model calm

  • Take time to have FUN and enjoy time together

Check out these ideas for family fun!

For age specific signs of distress and interventions go to NCTSN's Parent/Caregiver Guide
